Law Society of Upper Canada Transaction Levy
A lawyer or law firm that acts for one or more parties on a civil litigation matter or real estate matter is required to pay the Law Society a transaction levy surcharge of:
- Real Estate Transactions: $65.00 per transaction.
Civil Litigation Matters: $100.00 per proceeding.
Transaction Levy's in Brief Accounting are posted via a special Transaction Levy Disbursement Code.
To enable this, a unique revenue GL account is required. See below on creating a new GL account:
The new GL Account should use a 4500 series number, similar to below:
Once the new GL Account has been created, create 2 new Disbursement Codes (1 for Civil Litigation and 1 for Real Estate).

Create the Disbursement Codes as below:
Civil Litigation code:
Real Estate code:
IMPORTANT: Before clicking Accept on the new code, select the "levy" option from the side drop-down menu under the Logout button.
Check the Levy check-box, enter the description and click Accept:
USING THE DISBURSEMENT CODE ON SLIPS:
In files where this levy is required, create a disbursement slip by entering the LEVY Disbursement code:
The disbursement code information will be populated in the slip.
To generate a cheque to the Law Society and to create a levy report, select the Office module > Cheque tab.
With a blank cheque visible on screen, select the "Special" option from the menu bar at the top of the screen and select Cut Levy Cheque.
Enter the date range for the levy submission and click Print:
A report is displayed that lists the matters included - this can be saved to PDF or printed:
A cheque to the Law Society of Upper Canada is created with the total levy for the reporting period:
